Our Program
First and foremost, our Biblical Christian worldview is the inspiration for our program. We want our students to be inspired and cultivated toward becoming godly citizens who transform their world for Christ. What a wonderful place for young children to begin their adventures in learning!
Our unique Christ-centered program has been developed within the IB framework. Our program will be the foundation for the Primary Years Program (PYP) as children begin their journey through IB, which emphasizes our core values by nurturing international mindedness in a trans-disciplinary curriculum.
In addition, the educational inspiration for our Junior Kindergarten program comes from the teachings of Reggio Emilia. We believe that children learn best in an environment rich in natural resources with activities focused on their interests. In addition, the environment should foster children’s social and emotional needs. Through observation and documentation, we discover what peaks the children’s curiosity and we use that information to plan activities that are meaningful to them. This student-centered play-based approach is often self-guided by the children. They determine the pace at which they want to learn and explore. We view our classroom set up as the invisible third teacher; every activity, toy and piece of furniture is purposely arranged in such a way to best foster a sense of comfort and spirit of inquiry.
Some of the most significant educational outcomes in our classroom occur through group project work, collaboration, and hands-on activities. Through these means, your child will learn how to interact with their peers, build a sense of community, and express themselves in a creative manner. In addition, the children will also learn numeracy and literacy concepts. We believe that a whole child approach to early years education sets a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
Outdoor Activities
The Junior Kindergarten program at White Rock Christian Academy recognizes the importance of physical outdoor activities for young children. By implementing appropriate physical practices, we are providing an environment where children are developing the IB Learner Profile of being “Balanced.” Being “Balanced” means that they “understand the importance of balancing different aspects of their lives – intellectual, physical and emotional – to achieve well- being for themselves and others. We recognize our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live.”
